If Alan Jackson knocked back a cold one with Chris Stapleton you might get a taste for what Blake Dantier is about...
The Blue Mountains based songwriter cleverly blends his love of traditional country with today’s contemporary and alternative sounds. His honest and quirky approach to song writing struck a chord with country radio in 2020; his two singles – “Ash & Dust” and “I’d Do It Again” – both spending 9 weeks on the Music Network’s national airplay chart.
If you’re wondering where on earth this guy came from, let’s go back to Jamison Private Hospital in ’94… ok maybe not that far… Blake’s music career began in his teens. He fronted various high school bands who played the odd pub gig here and there, before moving on to study audio at uni. It was around this time his eyes were opened to the vast world of country music. He formed the imaginatively named, “Blake Dantier Band”, and played around Sydney for a few years, while constantly immersing himself in Country’s rich history. A few talent comps and awards later, he decided to take the plunge and release his music independently.
Like a well-balanced pale ale, Blake’s an all-rounder. He writes the songs, he sings the songs and he plays the hell out of a telecaster. His first single from 2020, “Ash and Dust”, was described by Good Call Live as a song that “completely takes my breath away with the pure emotion felt upon listening”. Whilst his follow up, “I’d Do It Again”, was the winner of a TSA Song of The Year award. He’s also enjoyed success with fiancée and Golden Guitar nominee, Cass Hopetoun – notching co-writing and guitarist credits on each of her singles, including the #1 song, “Typical Bride”.
Blake’s latest offering transports you back to a time when nobody bat an eye at a pair of boots and a cowboy hat and a little bit of tele twang was as common as renting your favourite flick on VHS. “Wish You Were My Beer,” sees Blake tackling the time-honoured trope of the drinking song in typical Country music fashion – vivid images of an empty barroom, set to a soundtrack of mournful steel guitar. It’s his fourth single on which he’s the sole writer and third time collaboration with Central Coast based producer and bass player, Simon Johnson (Troy Cassar-Daley, Amber Lawrence, Adam Harvey).
2021 is set to be a cracker of a year for the young up and comer. With live music slowly returning to Australia you best keep your eyes peeled for his name. His debut LP is set for release mid-year; an unapologetically Country collection of bittersweet ballads, raucous barroom anthems and everything in between.
